The Story Behind the Quilt

Our Izzy Girl

On a bright and sunny August day,
A pet store beckoned two senior citizens away.
In search of a pup with energy and spirit,
To share the senior life with the three of them in it.

Who would have thought on that average day,
That a tiny little shih tzu would bounce our way.
To fill our days with wonder and delight,
That made any ordinary day seem sunny and bright.

The one-pound pup we bought to share our house,
Grew and grew and remained quiet as a mouse,
Barking was never the remedy of choice,
Her look or stare became her sweet voice.

Grandchildren visited us whenever they could,
And playing and hugging Izzy was always understood,
Zoomies were “zoomed” with the grandchildren on site,
Laughing at Izzy’s antics made each day end just right.

Izzy’s talent escapes her when guarding her home site,
But will bark out her orders when it’s time to go night, night.
With a glaring stare only, a small pup can make,
Her eyes tell us she will sit there as long as it takes.

So, we scoop her up or she leads the way,
Letting Izzy know she rules the day.
Who would have thought the day she was bought,
That Izzy and us were part of a universal plot.

Navigating the house steps is beyond her control,
As one day down the steps she fell with a bump and a roll.
We gladly pick her up and carry her upstairs,
Knowing our day wouldn’t be right without her there.

While I work, she sleeps in her bed right under my feet,
I like watching her which makes my workday complete.
Whenever she sleeps, she makes cute snore sounds,
Reminding me throughout the day she is always around.

Izzy is the perfect pet as I like to say,
She lays in my lap no matter the time of day.
She is the perfect excuse to not move from my chair,
After all, how can I move when Izzy’s sleeping there?

Izzy and I are soul mates and have been from the start,
She loses her center when we are apart,
She will search every room until she is spent
Looking confused, wondering where I went.

My sweet Izzy girl is my constant refrain,
Whether morning, noon or pouring down rain
How can eight pounds of fur hold dominion over us,
It’s simple, because Izzy is worth all the fuss.

And finally, before the birthday party starts,
And acknowledging to all how Izzy stole our hearts.
Our hope is that sometime, somewhere along the way,
There is an Izzy in your life to brighten your day.

Now the day has arrived that caused this commotion,
To honor sweet Izzy’s 15 years of love and devotion.
She is bossy and sassy and rules the house,
In a wood sided home on a street called Rouse.

We will sing Happy Birthday to our tiny host,
And hope she remembers we love her the most.
Izzy melts our hearts and soothes our soul,
For a tiny pup she achieved her lifelong goal.

But on that sad day when her life fades away,
We will remember our luck on that sunny August day.
And tuck all the memories we hold in our hearts,
Knowing she was the perfect pet right from the start.
